Learning About Astrophotography In Hawaii

Astrophotography is something that I have always been fascinated by when I saw images “back in the day” on social media. During the pandemic I self taught myself about gear and how to shoot astrophotography images.

Hawaii is a really special place to take astrophotography images for a few different reasons.

1) Hawaii for the most part has pretty dark skies

2) There are so many unique places that you can visit to shoot photos of the night sky here

3) Variety of landscapes and regions you can visit

4) The weather for the most part is pretty good here

Unfortunately there are some downsides though to shooting astrophotography in Hawaii though, but keep in mind that there isn’t really such a thing as perfect conditions anymore as photographers are always looking for something new to shoot other then the same ol shots you see over and over again. Some things to consider when you are shooting astrophotography here in Hawaii:

  • Hawaii can have some humidity, wind, dust/sand which all affect the air quality

  • Some areas can see quickly changing weather such as on top of Haleakalā

  • Air temp (heat) will also cause some disturbance in your image if you are a pixel peeper

  • Light pollution: this really depends on where you are at. Honolulu on the island of Oahu is too bright

Of course, we do have the moon here in Hawaii (like you will find around the rest of the world) though at times pending on the phase of the moon, you can use the light of the moon to your advantage and score some KILLER shots using natural lighting.

If you are visiting Hawaii, specifically the island of Maui, consider doing a private workshop with me and I would be happy to help explore the night sky with you and we can customize your experience based on your skill level. I love shooting night images with other people and helping them find their own light in astrophotography.

You can find more information about each of the workshops by using the links below:

I am looking forward to shooting with you!
