Astrophotography On Maui

December 17th, 2024

Maui is an incredible to place to capture images of the night sky. While there are some areas that still have some light pollution, overall the island is ideal to shoot beautiful landscape images of the night sky.

Many photographers visit the Halealakalā National Park as they often see online this is the ‘main’ location to shoot astrophotography. While this is true it is a great place to visit and shoot, it also takes quite a commitment in time to drive to - roughly 2 hours from the base of the mountain to the very summit area. It is extremely cold by our standards as well since it is located 10,000ft above sea level and the weather conditions there are often change quickly. With that said, it is an incredible place to be and to visit to take photos of the night sky. It is essential though that you be prepared for this experience as conditions change quickly.

Other areas of the island are okay to shoot at outside of the Kahului area (ie where the main airport OGG is located) though it will depend on how dark you wish it to be. The coastal cities such as Kihei, Lahaina-Kaaanapali are still pretty bright even though they are smaller towns. I never would rule out shooting in certain areas though just because there is light pollution. Of course, we all want perfectly dark skies to get the best results in our images… but the reality is you have to be really remote in order to capture those types of images.

I am looking forward to shooting with you!
